Module Five: Understanding ADHD effect on relationships

Have you experienced relationship difficulties or do you get bored easily? Or do you prefer not to commit within relationships due to fear of intimacy?

If so, you are not alone and living in a world where distractions are plentiful, we are finding it harder more than ever to stay focused on task. When it comes to driving it can be that split second that could cause an accident and lose your life altogether.

This module explores the three dynamics that play out within relationships and provides a six-step process to rebuild relationships. It is important to note that this can be applied to the relationship with yourself as well as other relationships.

Time to create fulfilling lasting relationships

Step 3: Allocate time to do the work

Now it is time to become aware of your relationships including the one with yourself, then you can make changes to the way you relate to people. There are some useful tried and tested templates in order to set boundaries and maintain compassion. The end result will be that your heart will open up and you will develop more fulfilling relationships. As relationships are our life why not to work on this?

Coach Advice: "All relationships start with the relationship with ourselves, so start there and work your way outwards.”

Relationship dynamics will go up and down based on communication, compromise, and commitment, the 3C's. However, most of the time we are reliving the relationships we created in the past so if it was a toxic relationship, then the changes are you are bringing it into the relationship in the present. Trauma can be overcome through establishing what is happening right now in the present moment and reducing anxieties around inauthentic fears. It is possible to break out of these thought loops and develop healthier relationships based on non-violent communication and compassion. Some core beliefs are deep-rooted and this is where a professional ADHD coach can help to establish what the source is and then start to make lasting changes. Is it time to develop a better relationship with yourself?

Step 4: Download the templates

In order to help you put some changes in place, templates have been provided associated with relationships so you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Of course, there are also many apps that can help along the way too, but the important thing is to be consistent with what works for you. Just download each one and print your own copies. Alternatively, you can create your own in Evernote or another note organising app. Some of the templates include a guide to Non Violent Communication and radical forgiveness has been the most useful template for our clients.

Recommended Meditation for this module:

Relationships are our life and we need to start reflecting on the relationship with ourselves, to begin with as that determines all relationships. This Loving-kindness meditation which you practiced during module one is applicable for this module as you can focus on other relationships around you, someone you love, someone who is neutral and someone who has upset you. Then once these people have been meditating on, then you can send loving kindness out to the community and then to the whole world including all living beings. The more you practice this meditation, the more you will develop compassion and empathy for yourself and those around you which ultimately will improve your relationships. Therefore, we suggest you practice this guided meditation daily throughout this module until you move to the next one.

Step 5: Book a coaching review or take time out to reflect yourself

It is important to monitor and track our progress along the way in order to take charge of your ADHD. For example through taking the time out to do this reflection will highlight what is working for and what is not. This will save time in the long term as why to continue doing something that is not working for you and also if something is working for you, then why not do more of it? Therefore, please take this step as it is essential to the journey. You can even book a review session with a professional ADHD coach at a reduced rate below and then an online form will be sent to you in order to prepare for the session.

Monitor and track your progress.

Now it is time to review your module to see what you have learned and what changes you are putting in place. It is advisable that this is booked with one of our professional ADHD coaches.
